Safety Update

This week, we have had many meetings regarding safety.  Here is an update.

Safety Walk-Throughs:  We conducted school walk-throughs with first responders.  At each site, we observed a different emergency drill.  Takeaways from the meetings were as follows:
  1. Each attendee now has a better understanding of campus layouts and facilities.  Most first responders have never been in the cafeteria prep areas, locker rooms, and storage areas. Potential problem areas were identified.
  2. A recommendation was made that teachers to close the classroom doors during a tornado drill, thereby, potentially reducing the amount of glass exposure.
  3. A recommendation was made to be flexible with triage sites as inclimate weather and other potential dangers would negate the site as presently designated.
  4. Numerically name each building, placing the building's number on each corner of the building.
  5. During fire drills, (if necessary) designated personnel should stop traffic prior to crossing a public road; classes (preferably and when possible, i.e. elementary) should be aligned left to right by grade levels; students should align behind the teacher; blue, green and red cards should be used to identify the status of each class; first aid kits should accompany the teacher; doors should be shut and not locked (fire rated doors may prevent the fire from reaching other areas, shut but not locked so first responders can search the room).
  6. During lock-downs, utilize large green, blue and red cards on interior doors and exterior windows;  denote safe places for students on the exterior; to the greatest extent possible, remove persons from line of sight from the outside (in the least, students should be under the desk); designate more than one person to immediately lock exterior doors.
  7. Treat every drill as if it is real.
  8. Employees and substitutes should wear identification badges every day.
  9. Drills should be evaluated and results should be disseminated to employees.

Meeting With 9-1-1 Officials:  Tuesday of this week, I met with 9-1-1 persons to discuss a partnership with the agency that would allow direct communication between  9-1-1 and school buses. This would be most beneficial in communicating the location of a bus, disseminating first aid and medical instruction, and disseminating immediate weather information.  Additional discussions are to take place in the short term.

Additional Surveillance Cameras:  We continue to accept camera estimates and fine tune the location and camera quality.  New locations are, but not limited to the following:  elementary hallways, campus entrances, and common areas.

Rekeying:  We walked the campuses this week and determined access and keying tree for all doors. A proprietary key system is to be purchased mea ning that copies cannot be made at the local hardware store.  Key boxes will be mounted in secure locations.  The system will have a grand-grand master key that fits all Crenshaw County Board of Education locks.  Each school will have a grand master key that unlocks all doors on its campus.  Classroom doors are to be rekeyed, as well as mechanical and custodial doors.

Consideration has been given to classroom locks and door handles. Potential problems exist with any entry point.  The notion of all doors locking via push and turn mechanism on the inside is adequate provided the teacher is on the inside or if the teacher is on the outside with a key (a teacher on the outside of a locked room without a key is problematic in the least).  Also, rekeying doors so that they lock with a key from the inside doubles the costs of replacing the cylinder and does not offer resolve if the key cannot be found.

The inspection of exterior doors has now become priority.  Some mechanisms can be replaced or repaired.  Some doors will have to be replaced.

In summary, all doors will be rekeyed and all exterior doors will be made functional.

One-to-One Initiative Announced

At the March 18, 2013, Regular Meeting of the Crenshaw County Board of Education, Superintendent Randy Wilkes made public the system's intent to implement an electronic take-home device program in the fall of 2013.  The effort has been dubbed Crenshaw County's iLearn Initiative.  While students in grades 9-12 will each receive an iPad Mini, all other students will gain access to a portable iPad lab.  Also, to better facilitate instruction, all teachers will receive an iPad Mini.

Additionally, Mr. Wilkes noted that since December 2011, the system has completely renovated its infrastructure by replacing all of the hubs and electronic switches and that the system has added state-of-the-art Xirrus wireless access points.  All spots are hot and ready for use.

In the spring of this year, teachers of grades 9-12 will assess the availability, feasibility and alignment of iBooks.  Teachers will also consider the possibility of using current books electronically via PDF files.

Training for teachers and mandatory training for parents and students is scheduled for summer 2013.

In order to implement such an initiative, many systems have asked their communities to either increase sales or property tax. It bears mentioning that the aforementioned purchases will be made at zero additional costs to tax payers.

School Calendar Discussion

There has been little change in the "Opt-Out Calendar Bill" from a week ago.  Frankly, the certainty of the bill may not be determined until the end of the session, though we need to adopt a calendar in the short term.  If you need a "refresher" as to why the calendar is as it is, please enter the word "calendar" into search engine of this blog.  Below is a similar calendar to this year's that adheres to current law.  This is being published simply to create discussion.

My Plate Icon

Recently, MyPlate icons were posted in the cafeterias of Crenshaw County.  This USDA food guidance system is comprised of the new MyPlate symbol and other materials to help Americans make healthy food choices and to be active every day. MyPlate is part of a larger communications initiative based on 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans to help consumers make better food choices.  MyPlate is designed to remind Americans to eat healthfully; it is not intended to change consumer behavior alone. MyPlate illustrates the five food groups using a familiar mealtime visual, a place setting. For more information, click on: Choose My Plate.

North/South All-Stars to Have Familiar Faces

Legislative Update

This past Wednesday, the effort  to repeal the Common Core failed.  To read more: Repeal of Common Core Tabled

On Thursday, Governor Bentley signed the Accountability Act into Law.  The implications are uncertain and legal action against the act is possible.  Link to articles are below.
Supreme Court Rules
Governor Signs Bill

ALABAMA ACCOUNTABILITY ACT

There has been much discussion about the line in the bill that reads: "Nothing in this act shall be construed to force any school, whether public or nonpublic, to enroll any student."
  • Does it mean that Boards cannot limit intra-system transfer based on space, transportation costs, programmatic needs, etc.?
  • Does it mean that when considering inter-district transfers, the receiving system has the option to state "terms and conditions" for inter-system transfers?
  • Does it mean that systems can no longer have a policy that simply restricts enrollment in their schools to residents?
All the above assumes that the Supreme Court allows the bill to travel to the Governor and that he signs it.

Students Attend Youth Tour

Below is a group picture of the members of the 2013 Alabama Rural Electric Association’s Youth Tour.  HHS students Maitlyn Barton and Jessica Sexton attended the March 5-7 event.  Each stated that they had a really good time and are excited about the upcoming interviews that may result in the Washington D.C. trip.

Students Participate in NED

Below is a picture of LHS students participating in the “N.E.D. Corner."  NED is a character development activity that allows students to practice yoyo skills.  Recently, a NED representative came to the school and provided a yoyo exhibition.  During this exhibition he shared a story related to NED, which stands for:  Never give up, Encourage others, and Do your best.  Yoyo orders were taken the following week.  Over 100 student purchased a NED yoyo.  Teachers will utilize the “NED Corner” as the weather improves outside, and as students exhibit behavior and character that reflects the NED concept.  We look forward to seeing students "walk the dog."

ASSESSMENT AND ACCOUNTABILITY PLANS

The Assessment and Accountability Task Force has been meeting since 2011 to develop recommendations for a new Assessment and Accountability Plan, which will go into effect in 2013-14. They finally completed the recommendations last Wednesday. There is not yet a written report, but the Task Force is recommending an expansion of testing in grades 3-8 from the current reading/math to reading/math/social studies/science/writing.  The Task Force further recommends using the new ACT Aspire assessments for all grades for accountability beginning in 2013-14; those assessments are being field tested this spring.  Matters are up for consideration and the State Board will make the ultimate decision.
