Varsity Football Set to Kick-off

Thursday night the Brantley Bulldogs play host to the Luverne Tigers and Friday night the Highland Home Flying Squadron travel to McKenzie.  Both are great opportunities to support our young people.

A local supporter shared this 1944 ad from The Luverne Journal.  Note that the game was set for Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 PM and that the admission was $0.60 for adults and $0.30 for students.

LHS Alumnus Gives Back

Mr. Scott Sport, 1982 graduate of Luverne School, recently made a $1,000 donation to the LHS Band. Mr. Sport served as senior class president and valedictorian.  He played the trombone while in grade school.   He and his wife have three children.  Mr. Scott Sport is the son of Mr. Joe Rex and Mrs. Barbara Sport.

New Radios Placed in Buses

Crenshaw County buses have new radios.  Radios were purchased after sharing a frequency with the Crenshaw County Government officials for years.  Each radio is used for school, central office and bus communications and is capable of giving immediate GPS location and speed data.

Pictured above is a new bus radio.  Each school and Central Office serves as a base station.                                         The frequency range is near 50 miles.

LHS Hosts Gym Open House

On Friday, August 17, 2012, at 2 PM, community members gathered to recognize the city's gift to Crenshaw County Board of Education.  The band, cheerleaders and dance team all christened the gym   with their performances (and no one broke a sweat....well, maybe someone did).

With a 2 cents sales tax on cigarettes, the City of Luverne made its final payment on the Luverne gymnasium in 1985.  The 1954 cost of the gym was $95,000.  Architects estimate today's cost at $1.4 million.    To commemorate the occasion, Mayor Joe Rex Sport was given a pair of 1954 safety glasses found in a concrete block during the renovation.  Mr. Joe Rex then gave the glasses to Principal Pittman to be displayed at LHS.

Campus Beautification Projects A Success

Over 100 volunteers demonstrated their community pride by giving of their time to renovate and clean local schools this past Saturday.  Specifically: halls, entrances, and doors were painted;  restrooms were cleaned;  ceiling tiles were replaced;  difficult to maintain areas were spruced-up.   Much thanks to the administrators for organizing the event and  leading by example.   Kudos to all who attended.
