Grandparents Day 2012

Grandparents Day 2012 was a huge hit with the young and young at heart.  Principals reported that over 700 grandparents attended.  Much thanks to the cafeteria staff members and others who made the day such a success.

Students Catch Tiger Fever

Those attending LHS home games may have noticed the new T I G E R S flags that are paraded on the sideline after a score.  Students currently participating are all volunteers that were recommended by staff and who met requirements of the ability to exhibit team spirit within their respective grade levels and  are in good standing in regards to discipline and grades.  "TIGER Touchdown Team" personnel are: Alex Quates, Briana Odom, Randall Sipper, Janae Lowery, Kennedy Gregory, Rayne Duhart, and Chelsea Jackson.

Luverne Elementary Team T.I.G.E.R. Initiative

LHS Assistant Principal, Mr. Chris Pennington, and Staff have implemented Team T.I.G.E.R., a character education initiative designed to motivate and promote student and teacher ownership and responsibility in Luverne Elementary.  The program targets key indicators to foster leadership in each grade level.  The desired action indicators are posted in the elementary school hallways.  The activity is classroom driven, and grade level teachers will collaborate each week to choose one student per grade that best exemplifies the character traits listed above.  Recipients for each grade level will receive a Team T.I.G.E.R. T-shirt, be recognized on the school announcements, have a special certificate sent home in their weekly performance folders, have their name on the school marquee sign, and posted on the school website with their picture.  Selection for these students should be based on merit of action, rather than popularity.  Students who lead by example will best exemplify the desired traits necessary to be considered.  Two Team T.I.G.E.R. teacher/employees will be selected each month.  These teachers/employees will also receive a T-shirt and recognition.  At some point at the end of the semester, recipients will be gathered together to attend a special lunch in their honor.

THOUGHTFUL: Always helping others in your school, when you see they need someone.

INITIATIVE: Doing things because they need to be done (picking up trash someone else left in the building, outside, etc.  Turning off lights left on, flushing a toilet left un-flushed, closing a window left open).

GENEROUS:  Giving of your time and resources (helping someone with a subject or lesson, loaning a pencil or piece of paper, sharing your snack when someone doesn’t have one).

EXCELLENCE: Trying your hardest every class period, every day, to follow the rules, class work, and tests.

RESPECT:  Showing your teachers, custodians, coaches, and administrators respect (please, yes ma’am, no ma’am, yes sir, no sir, and thank you).  Showing your team spirit and pride in your school, city, and nation!

BHS Receives $50,000 ACCESS Grant

Congratulations to Brantley School for receipt of a $50,000 ACCESS Grant.  Yours truly made the announcement at the pep rally last Friday.  Said funds will be used to purchase wireless access points, laptops, and 70 iPads. (I mistakenly stated that the devices would be iPad 3s, however, because of limited funds and volume of devices to be ordered, items will be iPad 2s).

Criteria for the grant was that the site had to be a previous pilot ACCESS site and funds had to be expended per State guidelines by September 30, 2012.  Needless to say, the order has been placed!

HHS Students Participates in AU's Half Time Show

This is a follow-up from last week's blog.  The following students participated in last week's half-time show at Auburn: Samantha Askew, David Taylor, Jessie Flack, Mr. Chad Turner, Honesty Ripley, Courtney Chandler.  Congratulations, one more time!

Pepe Le Pew Remains on the Loose

Over the weekend, Pepe Le Pew (a.k.a. pole cat, skunk), "sprayed" a visit to Central Office.  He (or she) made their presence known everywhere but "sprayed" special attention to the Maintenance Department.  Seen below is a photo of the department's efforts to catch Pepe.  Needed items for such are trap, oiled sausage at least 9 months old, and l-o-n-g rope that leads out da' door.  

FYI:  According to Dr. Google, a skunk can spray with accuracy up to 10 feet and a fine mist can reach up to 15 feet.  To aid in its projection, a skunk may stand on its front feet.  A skunk's musk volume is approximately 1 tablespoon and can spray up to 6 times consecutively (Yeh, right, who's counting anyway!)

LHS Students Support Classmate and Family

Mr. Donnie (D.J.) Brantley, father of sixth grader, Tay Brantley, was involved in a motorcycle accident on September 1. He was airlifted to UAB hospital because of his critical condition.  He has already undergone some surgeries to repair a ruptured bladder, broken pelvis, broken legs, and

broken arms. He faces more surgery.   Coach D.J. has volunteered as a football coach with our termites and mini-mites.

Since this family is facing weeks of hospitalization, LHS students wanted to help and help they did! In just three days, the sixth graders donated over $250.00 and at least $100 worth of snacks for the family.  The students and teachers presented Tay with the donations.  Several tears and prayers were

shared with him. It is refreshing to see students give willingly and pull together in time of need.
