$5000 Today or 1 Cent Doubled Every Day for 30 Days

Mrs. Albritton's and Mrs. Baines' class was captivated by the story read by Mrs. Albritton in Math class. The story was One Grain of Rice by Demi. A story about a raja from India and a young girl asking for repayment for a good deed. She asked for one grain of rice on the first day and then it doubled every day following for 30 days. The students were asked if they had a choice, would they take $5000 today or one penny doubled everyday for 30 days. Everyone chose the $5000. After listening to the story they discovered that they missed earning over 5 million dollars. The lesson grabbed their attention and kept them engaged throughout. A great opportunity for reading across the curriculum.
