Brantley School Receives Funds for Volleyball

Congratulations to BHS. They are the recipient of the 2012 LEMAK Award. Said funds will be used in support of their inaugural volleyball teams.

Flying Squadron Named State's Top High School Mascot

Highland Home School was recently named the State's most unusual mascot by readers of al.com. Read below:

Last week, we asked our readers to vote on the most unusual high school sports mascot in Alabama. The poll is now closed, and the results are in after more than 3,200 votes were cast.With nearly 1,000 votes, the Highland Home Flying Squadron came in first place, receiving 29 percent of the total votes.

The Sidney Lanier Poets, who were in first place early on, finished second with 754 votes or about 23 percent. The Frisco City Whippets, whose school closed in 2008, rounded out the top three with 592 votes, or about 18 percent.

The Whippets were followed, in order, by the Alabama School for the Deaf Silent Warriors, the Holt Ironmen, the Arab Knights, the Paul W. Bryant Stampede, the Spanish Fort Toros, the Hayes Pacesetters and the Evangel Christian Lightning.

According to the Alabama High School Football Historical Society, all 11 players on Crenshaw County's football team in 1941 were drafted into the U.S. military's airborne division. When the players returned the school changed its name to Highland Home and adopted the "Flying Squadron" mascot.

An F-16 jet which was used in Desert Storm in 1992 was donated and placed in the parking lot of the school in 2008. The project was funded by volunteers, reports The Greenville Advocate.Check out full results of the poll below, and share your thoughts in the comments.

Bruce Beasley Recognized For Good Deeds

WSFA recognized LHS custodian, Mr. Bruce Beasley, as the recipient of the "Cash for Kindness" Award last Tuesday night during its news broadcast. His reference stated that he does a fantastic job cleaning the school and that he goes the extra mile to help out in any way he can. Mr. Beasley is an advocate of students and is very supportive of their fund raisers. Mr. Beasley's wife is a breast cancer survivor and he is faithful in taking her to doctors' appointments. He was a tremendous contributor to the school's Relay for Life Team. Mr. Beasley also makes note and reports suspicious school behavior which assists in keeping the school safe. Mr. Beasley serves as a member of the Northeast Crenshaw Volunteer Fire Department and is an active member of his church. Congratulations Mr. Bruce!

Brantley School Fairs Well During the Storm

While some neighbors were not as fortunate, Brantley School scaithed the pre-Independence storm with the loss of one tree. The tree, located near the softball field, is being removed from all properties.

HHS Projects Near Completion

Highland Home School's Primary Building and Office Building were formerly heated by1963 hanging gas heaters and cooled by window units. Now each room is heated and cooled per central air unit that uses a mere 7 amps, the equivalent of a hair dryer. Also, the gym air conditioning is near complete.

LHS Gym Update

Several have asked about summer construction projects. Here is an update on the LHS gym.

On Friday, July 6, 2012, two forty ton units were delivered to Luverne School's gymnasium. The two units were transported from Texas and placed via cranes atop the girls' locker room. Steel supports were affixed to the roof by Pemberton Company. Installation of the system is to be completed by Bradley Incorporated.
