Riding the Reading Carosel

It was said that Ms. Jeenenan James' classes were doing an "awesome" job preparing for the ASPIRE via a reading carousel. Carousel Brainstorming (also known as Rotating Review)  provides scaffolding for new information to be learned or existing information to be reviewed through movement, conversation, and reflection. Carousel Brainstorming is a cooperative learning activity that can be used both to discover and discuss background knowledge prior to studying a new topic, as well as for review of content already learned.  This technique allows for small group discussion, followed by whole-class reflection. While taking part in Carousel Brainstorming, small groups of students rotate around the classroom, stopping at various “stations” for a designated period of time (usually 1-2 minutes).  At each station, students activate their prior knowledge of a topic or concept and share their ideas with their small group.  Each group posts their ideas at each station for all groups to read. This particular carousel included the following stations:
  • Reading comprehension
  • Foods that help your brain focus
  • Coloring to relieve a little stress
  • Ways to relieve test anxiety
  • Context clues
  • Journal entry about what each student will do to be prepared for testing
Keep up the good work students, Thank you Ms. James for your leadership.

LHS Drama Presents "Dramatic Re-enactment"

Congratulations to Mrs. Starla Jones and her students for their fine performance in a "Dramatic Re-enactment."

Summary
This was the perfect play for folks who like airing out dirty laundry---literally.  In this detective farce, our poor officer tries to uncover the reason behind the death of Eric's wife, Patrice.  Could it have something to do with the fact that she was playing cards with Eric and his five other ex-wives at a family reunion? No one is allowed in or out of the hotel until whoever did this dastardly deed is discovered.  The football team cannot get to the big game, and the gardening club can't go strawberry picking!  And why has the housekeeping crew hidden the body at the bottom of a laundry bin?

Enjoy the pics below from the performance.

Ms. Gayla's Class Reaches Out

One of Mrs. Gayla Littlejohn's goals this year was for her class to address a need within the community. The class launched its “One Heart, Helping Hands” campaign earlier this year that included a project for each semester.

First semester's project was "Operation Stocking Stuffer," whereas the class donated Christmas stockings to children that had been placed in child protective services.

Second semester, the class painted and decorated  flower pots, then planted a variety of indoor plants in the pots. The students were responsible for the taking care of the plants.  This week, the students delivered the plants to the Lake Haven Assisted Living Center in Luverne.  The class wishes to  thank Mrs. Nancy Williams for arranging the delivery.

Kudos to Ms. Gayla and her class for their acts of kindness!

BHS Softball Team Honors Their Opponent

Saturday the Brantley Varsity Softball team won the Pleasant Home Invitational.  The Lady Dogs went 5-0 outscoring their opponents 19-3, including a 2-0 win over 3A Opp in the championship game.  Sydnee Bryan, Jessica Hermeling, and Kelsey Hall each had four hits on the day.  Bryan and Alex Wilcox also homered once.  Bryan led the team with 5 RBI's while Hermeling had 4, two of which were the only runs scored in the championship game.  In the circle, Wilcox had 33 strikeouts in 16 innings with 3 wins.  Leanna Johnson had 13 strikeouts in 10 innings with 2 wins.

The Brantley School Softball team paid tribute during the recent Pleasant Home Tournament by wearing teal ribbons in honor of a Pleasant Home student who is currently battling ovarian cancer. All proceeds from the tournament went to her family. Kudos to the BHS girls for their kindness and compassion.

Crenshaw County Students Perform at Survivors' Dinner

Unity is the act of joining together as a whole or to be combined into one.  The Crenshaw County Choir was created for many reasons, but a primary reason was to bring the system together for a common good.  Due to family emergency, we were unable to attend this year's Relay for Life Survivor Dinner, but we understand that the system's students did a superb job and their performances were enjoyed by all.  Beyond the system's choir performance, many other school groups and individuals entertained.

Please take time to join  Crenshaw County at Turner Park Friday night for the annual Relay for Life.  Many more school talents will be  displayed.    Opening ceremonies are at 6 PM and the lighting of luminaries is at 9 PM.

Thanks to all for giving back to the community.

AL.COM Reports Hall Going to Bama

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama — After hinting at the possibility last week, Donta' Hall made it official. The 6-foot-8 shot blocker from Luverne on Thursday committed to Alabama's basketball signing class of 2015, BamaOnLine first reported.

UAB, Mississippi State, Troy had offered the 4-star prospect as Auburn, Georgia and West Virginia all showed interest. But Alabama was at the top of the list. "They text and call, and UAB's about the same," he told AL.com last week. "I met with them some time last week. They'll be better because they played with a couple freshman last year. 'Bama still should be strong."

As a junior, Hall averaged 11.7 points, 10.1 rebounds and 6.7 blocks a game. He helped Luverne to the Final 48 two straight years without winning a title.

His team finished 24-2 last season with a 2A championship game loss to Elba. Hall got in foul trouble in the title game to score two points, blocked six shots in 17 minutes.

Most recruiting services don't have rankings or ratings for the 2015 class, but ESPN rated him a 4-star prospect. Hall is the second commitment for Alabama's Class of 2015 after Brandon Austin of Montgomery pledged in August. The Tide could get more recruiting news Friday when top 2014 target Jackson Davis announces his decision. The Lexington, Ky., product visited Tuscaloosa last weekend. Davis was previously committed to Rice, but is now considering Alabama, Butler and Rice. The announcement will come at 2:45 p.m. CT Friday.

Wesley averaged 32.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game and shot a blistering 62% from the field and 56% from 3 point range her senior year.  Wesley won the Alabama Sports Writers Association's Player of the Year in 2013 and 2014.

Hall and Jones Represent at Bryant Jordan

"Mirror Mirror on the wall, who was the fairest of them all?"  The girls from Crenshaw County of course.

Kelsey Hall of BHS and Mallory Jones, each of whom won their perspective regions, represented our system very well Monday night at the Bryan-Jordan Banquet in the Sheraton Ballroom in Birmingham.  Each girl paraded down the red carpet to take their seats of honor down front.  During dinner, a continuous video introduced the young women to all.  More than 500 hundred were in attendance including Senator Jeff Sessions.  Here are a few pics below.

Livestock Judging Team Goes High Tech

The BHS FFA Livestock Judging Team advanced from district competition earning a spot in state competition the first week in June.  A key component of ongoing team preparation involves the use of electronic resources via their iPads.  The team currently practices twice a week, but with such an overwhelming amount of information to learn, will have to engage in ongoing electronic self-study to ensure the greatest level of preparation.  Only one team member does not have an iPad at this time, as she is in 8th grade and using an alternate device.

The students will keep their iPads until state competition is over rather than returning them when other iPads are collected at the end of the school year.  Their level of preparation is dependent upon device availability.

Kudos to the team!  Kudos to the technology initiative!

Alvin Briggs, Director of the Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association (AHSADCA), made the announcement Thursday.

Also, an All-Sports Equipment Expo and other related activities are scheduled throughout the week. Two of the highlights will be the Sportsmanship Banquet, which honors all schools that have not had an ejection or fine during the 2013-14 school year, and the Championship Coaches Awards Banquet, which also honors the 2013-14 Making A Difference Award winners as well as the Dr. Lemak Award recipients.
Coaching the South girls’ all-stars will be Jarvis Wilson of Blount and Eric Bailey of Maplesville. Nigel Card of Saint James is the administrative coach.

McCardle Notches a 34 on the ACT

HHS's Dylan McCardle is anything but an average student.  The self-proclaimed "camilia" says that he can blend in with any group of people, that he enjoys all types of music, and that he responds best when interested and not pushed.   So for
Dylan McCardle
whatever reason, he become interested in bettering his ACT of score 33 (he was not pushed).  Just a few weeks ago, Dylan received his most recent results which were English-31, math 34, reading-35 and science-35 to give him a composite score of 34.  I asked him why the improvement in 2014, he said that he knew he could do better in math as he had made a 31 because he had forgotten his calculator. Nearly all of Dylan's scores are in the 99th percentile. Dylan attributes his test taking ability to working logic puzzles via our Gifted Program in grades 3-6.  He says that this exercise taught him how to learn and apply logic. Outside of the Gifted Progam, Dylan attributes his success to his love of math, especially Algebra and geometry. Dylan also enjoys reading stories that attract him and says he will set it down in a hurry if he becomes disinterested. According to Dylan, "If the story does not make sense in the first few pages, I will not open it again".  Dylan says that his parents also played a vital role by offering encouragement.  He stated that his parents didn't just want all A's, but high A's. Dylan has applied to Vanderbilt (#2 ranked college town in the U.S.), but Auburn, and Georgia Tech are also on the radar.  His interests are in some type of engineering, though he is intrigued by psychological research.  Congratulations Dylan on your HIGH ACT Score. We wish you well.

Scores were released per permission.
