Highland Home School was recently named the State's most unusual mascot by readers of al.com. Read below:
Last week, we asked our readers to vote on the most unusual high school sports mascot in Alabama. The poll is now closed, and the results are in after more than 3,200 votes were cast.With nearly 1,000 votes, the Highland Home Flying Squadron came in first place, receiving 29 percent of the total votes. The Sidney Lanier Poets, who were in first place early on, finished second with 754 votes or about 23 percent. The Frisco City Whippets, whose school closed in 2008, rounded out the top three with 592 votes, or about 18 percent.
The Whippets were followed, in order, by the Alabama School for the Deaf Silent Warriors, the Holt Ironmen, the Arab Knights, the Paul W. Bryant Stampede, the Spanish Fort Toros, the Hayes Pacesetters and the Evangel Christian Lightning.
According to the Alabama High School Football Historical Society, all 11 players on Crenshaw County's football team in 1941 were drafted into the U.S. military's airborne division. When the players returned the school changed its name to Highland Home and adopted the "Flying Squadron" mascot.
An F-16 jet which was used in Desert Storm in 1992 was donated and placed in the parking lot of the school in 2008. The project was funded by volunteers, reports The Greenville Advocate.Check out full results of the poll below, and share your thoughts in the comments.
