The new Crenshaw County drug dog, Sava, was put to her first test this past Tuesday at Luverne School. Crenshaw County Investigator Mike Johnson, who has more than 15 years of K-9 experience, is most pleased with her progress. Officer Johnson has trained and worked canines in numerous settings including, but not limited to, the United States/Mexico border patrol. Chief handler, Officer Lee Simmons, is also pleased with Sava's development and states that she performed extremely well during the 3.5 hour search. Every student in grades 7-12 participated in the unscheduled activity. To keep the dog stimulated, with employees serving as witnesses, an illegal substance was periodically and purposefully hidden. Sava conducted a "silent sit" on the hidden substance on all 4 occasions.
Via the Crenshaw County Sheriff's Department, CCBOE has near unlimited access to the dog. Searches will be random and will range in size and location. Not all students will be searched each time, nor will all areas be searched each time.
Thank you Crenshaw County Sheriff's Department for your support of a safe and healthy learning environment.
