Career Expo a HUGE Success

The first-ever Crenshaw Forward Career Expo was a tremendous success.  We were pleased to have with us nearly 45 exhibits from Crenshaw County career related fields.  We are most appreciative of the business and industry leaders who have given of their time and effort to be with us.  Another special thanks to the volunteers, many of whom were Rotarians.  A special thanks to Career Coach Mrs. Polly DuBose and Career Technical Director Mr. Chuck Alford for organizing the event.   Another specials thanks to Mrs. Robyn Snellgrove, President and CEO of the Crenshaw County Economic and Industrial Authority, for her guidance and support. The goal of the day was to provide 8th grade students with in-depth information that would assist them in making wise high school, post high school and career choices.

Students were grouped alphabetically and assigned to an adult team leader.  Students from each school were placed in these groups and encouraged to collaborate with team members, many of whom were strangers and  much like they will be asked of in the real world.

There were 13 Career Clusters represented with several exhibitors in each cluster.  Each student group had 15 minutes to explore and interact with each career cluster represented. Students interacted with all exhibitors and all clusters. Those in attendance were: Luverne Health and Rehab, Dr. Jane Lamb, Hometown Medical, LBWCC School of Nursing, Crenshaw Drugs, Andalusia Manor, PowerSouth, Alabama School of Aviation, SMART LLC, Brantley Public Library, the City of Luverne (multiple departments), Dr. Alethea Gammage, Town of Brantley (multiple departments), The Luverne Journal, First Citizens Bank, BB&T, 61 on Main, Craig Wells Plumbing, Ken Lyons of WAOQ (broadcasting live with student input), Trendsetters, Alabama Army National Guard, LBWCC, AIDT Robotics Lab,  Alabama Power (multiple stations), Darryl E. and Pepsi Cola.  Students received a first-hand view of the $100,000 Tesla all electric car, rode a power bike, scratched records, explored robotic careers via Alabama’s Industrial Development Trainer’s (AIDT) 53’ mobile trailer, operated robots, and loaded the Pepsi Truck (it was a trick, lol).  WAKA news also reported from the site (I saw the piece on the news last night at 10. Let me know if you see it on their website.)

One last kudos to the students for dressing their best, acting their best and tolerating the better-than -expected weather.
