Cupid Makes Showing at LHS

Concerned that some students might not receive a valentine this past Tuesday, a particular parent, group of parents and local church, whom I am sure would all like to remain anonymous,  organized a program so that all the elementary children at Luverne would get a Valentine's balloon with a Bible verse via PTA fundraiser.   I watched countless children check-out of the afterschool program with tremendous smiles and balloon in tow.    It is wonderful to have such caring and concerned individuals and organizations in our community.  Kudos to all, and a special thanks to Ms. Anonymous.

Board Recognizes Career and Technical Month

The Board Room of the Joe R. Sport Administrative Building was filled to capacity as Career and Technical  teachers and students throughout the system were recognized last Monday night.

Bulldogs say "Laissez les bons temps roule!"

Pronounced Lazay-Lay Bon-Tom Roulay, it's Cajan French for "Let the good times roll.". That is exactly what the Lady Bulldogs did last night as they defeated Pleasant Home 72-46.  The Dogs are now headed to Mobile, not to celebrate Fat Tuesday, but to participate in the Regionals. Tip time is 9 AM. King cake,Moon pie,(stay away from the chicken on a stick) lattae, and basketball....does not get much better. Go Dogs!

State House Happenings

A few times per legislative session, District 3 Superintendents travel to Montgomery to advocate education legislation.  Yesterday, I took the opportunity to visit with Senator Bryan Taylor and Representative Charles Newton to find them both very amicable.

There was much discussion regarding Charter Schools, though new language surfaced just a few hours ago. I have read it and there are real implications for schools in improvement. Stay tuned.  Other highlights of my visit include:

  • Economist Ira Harvey's prediction of 3 percent proration this fiscal year,
  • Governor Robert Bentley's ETF budget proposal that includes a .5 increase in divisors. (It is doubtful that we will see a budget until after the Legislative Break (March 27)), and
  • Senator Gerald Dial's bill that includes $100 million in bonds for electronic devices in lieu of textbooks in grades 9-12.

Board Approves HVAC Bids

In action last night (2/13/2012), the Crenshaw County Board of Education approved bids to purchase and install HVAC systems in 30 classrooms and 2 gymnasiums.  Once said projects are complete, CCBOE will be rid of all of its antiquated classroom hanging heaters and all of its gyms will be both heated and cooled.  These projects will conclude the Board's use of its $1.3 million QZAB bond.  Because the Board is required to only pay back $.75 of every dollar and due to projects coming in under the estimated cost, CCBOE will have to actually pay back $881,000 of the $1.3 million.

BHS Students Excel Outside of the Classroom

Emily Sims and Madison Stewart recently attended Dance Masters of America (DMA) in Montgomery.  While at DMA they were able to take classes and be evaluated by dancers from across the country.  Many of the dance instructors have appeared on “So You Think You Can Dance.”  Over three hundred dancers participated in this year’s convention.  While at DMA, Emily received the MVP award. This is given to dancers that demonstrate leadership qualities.  Madison was awarded DMA Protégé.  She auditioned with sixty-seven, eight, and nine year olds- and placed in the top five.  Emily will receive a scholarship to attend the convention again next year and Madison will perform in the opening number.  We congratulate these students and look forward to them using their talents in our schools.

Now That's the Ticket

Mrs. Amanda Hughes recorded this from a child’s math journal this past week.  This is evidence of what children can do when provided the appropriate conceptual framework.  By the way, this is a kindergarten journal.

HHS Announces Bryant Jordan Winners

Each year the Bryant-Jordan Student Athlete Program recognizes outstanding student athletes from the entire state of Alabama.  Students are nominated by their local school committee and then compete against other student athletes in their respective areas and regions.  The Bryant-Jordan Student Athlete Program awards hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships to deserving student athletes who excel academically and in their sports of choice as well as those achievement winners who, in spite of various barriers, excel in the classroom and on the various sports venues.

Athletic Director Doug Bailey, Kase Kelley, Raheem Berry and Principal Joe Eiland
This year we are proud to announce that Kase Kelley was awarded the Bryant-Jordan Scholar Athlete Award and Raheem Berry was awarded the Bryant-Jordan Achievement Award for Class 2A Area 5.  Raheem Berry was awarded the Class 2A Region 3 Bryant-Jordan Achievement Award and will go on to Birmingham to compete on the state level.  We congratulate both of these outstanding student athletes and wish Raheem the best in the next level of competition .

HHS Celebrates 100th Day

How many ways can you count to 100?  Highland Home 1st grade knows! They enjoyed the 100th day of school writing about what they could do 100 times as well as discussing if they had 100 wishes what their first wish would be.  They had a happy 100th day!

An Interesting Read

Representative McGill was quoted as saying, "It's a Biblical principle. If you double a teacher's pay scale, you'll attract people who aren't called to teach..."

LHS to Host Headland Visitors

We are very proud of all our schools for your academic prowess thus far.   I read this e-mail from Mrs. Ash this week and it speaks volumes of your efforts.
Mrs. Donna McDougald's RoomDuring Parenting Night

CONGRATULATIONS! YOU HAVE BEEN SELECTED TO REPRESENT OUR DISTRICT
You  have been working hard and people have noticed.  Due to your professionalism and hard work, a team of math teachers and an administrator from Headland Middle School will be coming to Luverne High School to observe 6th, 7th, and 8th grade math classes.  The classroom visits are set to take place on Wednesday, March 14, 2012.  They have heard great things about your adventures with CMP and would like to see it in action.  They are not coming to see a " dog and pony show." They want to see real teachers teaching real students using the meaning-making strategies and activities that our CMP 2 curriculum provides.  More details regarding the visit will be forthcoming.  Thanks for all that you do for the students of LHS.

We would like all of you to know that we are making summer professional development plans already. We will continue to tweak that which we do and continue to search for that which we know is best for children and spread over our entire curriculum.

Brantley School FFA Members

Also pictured are the Crenshaw County Junior Cattlemen youth who participated showing steers and heifers.  They are:  Justin Rhodes - son of Michelle and Ronald Rhodes of Highland Home, and Cameron and Cassidy Catrett - daughters of Perry and Ashley Catrett of Brantley. Justin, Cameron, and Cassidy will now compete in Dothan for district competition in February and in Montgomery for state competition in March.
