State House Happenings

A few times per legislative session, District 3 Superintendents travel to Montgomery to advocate education legislation.  Yesterday, I took the opportunity to visit with Senator Bryan Taylor and Representative Charles Newton to find them both very amicable.

There was much discussion regarding Charter Schools, though new language surfaced just a few hours ago. I have read it and there are real implications for schools in improvement. Stay tuned.  Other highlights of my visit include:

  • Economist Ira Harvey's prediction of 3 percent proration this fiscal year,
  • Governor Robert Bentley's ETF budget proposal that includes a .5 increase in divisors. (It is doubtful that we will see a budget until after the Legislative Break (March 27)), and
  • Senator Gerald Dial's bill that includes $100 million in bonds for electronic devices in lieu of textbooks in grades 9-12.
